Safe Patient Handling: What You Need To Know

Every employer applies the overriding principle that workers and other persons should, so far as is reasonably practical, be given the highest level of protection against harm to their health, safety and welfare from hazards and risks arising from work.

Manual handling is the most common cause of injuries for employees working in aged care facilities, accounting for 58 per cent of all injuries. Nurses, carers, cleaners, laundry, maintenance, administration and kitchen staff have all been injured during manual handling.

 

It is important to remember that manual handling injuries can be the result of lots of stresses and strains over time. Often the immediate cause is only part of the picture.

 

What is ‘No Lifting’?

A ‘no lifting’ approach is one where staff are not asked to physically support the weight of those that they are assisting to transfer or move. Mechanical and other aids, such as slide boards, are used instead. A no lifting policy does not mean that every resident with mobility problems must have a lifter.
